OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

What is Solar System ?

It is our Sun and everything that travels around it. The Solar System is made up of all the planets that orbit our Sun. In addition to planets, the Solar System also consists of moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, and dust and gas. Our Solar System is always in motion.

The Sun and the nine planets are part of the Solar System. The nine planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The Sun is in the center of the Solar System. It is the biggest object in our solar system. The Sun contains around 98% of all the material in the Solar System.

Asteroids
Asteroids are huge chunks of rocks that travel round the Sun.

Comets

Comets are sometimes called "dirty snowballs" or "icy mudballs". They are a mixture of ices (both water and frozen gases) and dust that for some reasons didn't get incorporated into planets when the solar system was formed. Comets have long glowing tails.

Meteors

Meteors are tiny rocks which probably come from the asteriod belt.

PLANETS
Mercury
It is too close to the Sun. The temperature is too hot to support life.

Venus
A great amount of the heat from the Sun is trapped in its atmosphere. This makes it hotter than Mercury.

Earth
It has water, air and a suitable temperature to support life.

Mars
Almost all of its water is frozen. Scientists  have not found any life there.

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the four planets that are the nearest to the Sun. They are called the inner planets. All of these planets are made of rocks. Each of the inner planet has an atmosphere. The atmosphere of Earth contains air which is suitable for living things to survive. The atmosphere of the other inner planets is very thin and poisonous to living things.

Jupiter
It is so big that all the other planets could fit inside it.

Saturn
Saturn has three wide rings. They can be seen with a telescope.

Uranus
Unlike the other planets, Uranus is lying on its side as it goes round the Sun.

Neptune
Neptune is covered with a blue ocean of liquid methane.

Pluto

Pluto is very cold because it is very far from the Sun.

The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. They are mainly made of gases. Their temperature is too cold to support life.
